Charlie went climbing for the first time in 1975 while still in high school. In 1984 - a few years after finishing college - he was hired on at the Climbing School. In January 2009, he marked his 25th year with the EMS Climbing School – and all of those years have found him focused on guiding rock, ice and mountaineering courses on New Hampshire’s cliffs and peaks.
Charlie is an AMGA Certified Rock Instructor and an AMGA Certified Single Pitch Instructor/Examiner, and he served on the AMGA Board of Directors from 1998-2004. He has also served on the NH Mountain Rescue Service Board of Directors from 1990 to the present. He is Level II certified by the American Avalanche Institute, and he is a Wilderness First Responder.
Throughout the years, Charlie has spent several successful seasons in the Alaska Range, summited a few peaks in the Canadian Rockies (much greater number of epic failures there), climbed many classic ice routes in Scotland and the Northeast US, and enjoyed one trip to the Himalaya - during which he climbed all but the very top bit of a peak over there.
His other pursuits include skiing, snowboarding, backcountry ice skating, beekeeping, and trying to get his teenage kids to put their socks in the hamper, for crying out loud. It should also be noted that Charlie held the title as 4th Grade Wrestling Champion (Featherweight Div.) for one year in 1969 at Moses DeWitt Elementary School in DeWitt NY. He still has the small plastic trophy to prove it.
Charlie lives in Tamworth NH with his wife and daughters, a dog, two turtles, and a few thousand honeybees. One day he hopes to go back to the Canadian Rockies – only this time armed with increased experience, modern gear, a decent automobile, and a valid credit card.
