When are your courses offered?
The majority of our rock climbing courses run from early spring through late fall. Our Mountaineering programs usually start in mid November, while our ice climbing programs start sometime in December when conditions allow. Most programs are available seven days a week unless noted otherwise. You can schedule any day you want by calling our toll free reservation line at 800-310-4504.
How many students are in each class?
Our standard instruction is taught with a maximum of three students with one instructor, some group programs may run at higher ratios. We keep our ratios low so that you get personal attention. If you book in for a group lesson as an individual or a party of two, we may match you with someone else if it is appropriate. Private lessons are also available for all programs.
What equipment do I need to bring?
The EMS Climbing School furnishes all technical equipment for all courses. This includes climbing shoes or boots, ice axes, crampons, harnesses, ropes, helmets and all associated hardware. If you have your own gear, bring it along, though if it’s out-of-date and poses safety issues we will encourage you to use ours. You are required to bring clothing appropriate for your day out. A detailed equipment list can be found at the bottom of each course page. If you have any questions about what to bring or what will be provided for you, please call us at 800-310-4504.
What time do we need to be at the Climbing School?
Most courses meet between 8:30 and 9:00 AM each day and usually finish up between 3:30 and 5:00 PM. Some guided climbs and some winter programs may start earlier. We will take a few minutes on the morning of the first day to outfit you for equipment and then head right out to the crags.
Where will we climb?
Each day we will choose a different cliff or location to climb based on weather, your abilities and desires and the teaching objectives for the day.
Do I need to be super fit to climb?
You don't need to be a super athlete to climb. If you are eager to learn, enthusiastic and in reasonably good shape, we can teach you to climb. Our guides range in age from mid 20's to mid 60's and we teach clients of all ages.
Can children climb?
For group courses you must be 16 years or older to join. For kids 15 and younger, we recommend private lessons and family programs. These can be arranged 7 days a week!
Is It appropriate to tip the guide?
Tipping is never expected...but always appreciated.

What is the policy for rain or bad weather?
Rock climbing can be done in the rain, wet rock may affect the difficulty of what we do, but does not affect safety, what it does do is make the climbing a whole lot less fun. Should the weather forecast be for rain all day, we give you the option of rescheduling your day or a taking a full refund. Should the forecast be for just a few showers, we like to go out and give it a go. (half the time the weathermen are wrong anyway!). Should you lose a potion of your day due to weather, we'll either refund you the prorated amount or credit it towards another day. Please Check our Cancellation and Refund Policy.
Part of what we teach with our winter programs is how to deal with adverse weather conditions, so we will go out in all but the most miserable conditions. On Mt Washington ascents, we will attempt the climb in all conditions, if weather or avalanche danger turns us back, that is all part of the mountaineering experience.
