The Shawangunks or the 'Gunks' is nestled just outside the village of New Paltz, New York, in the beautiful Hudson Valley. Located an hour and a half north of New York City, it is one of the nation's premier rock climbing epicenters. The cliffs are located within the Historic Mohonk Preserve. Where in addition to rock climbing, you can also run, bike or hike along the miles of gently rolling carriage roads, and single track trails. When you're not enjoying the incredible rock, just a short drive north, the Catskill Mountains region offers a wide range of summer and winter activities ice climbing, waterfall hikes, snowshoeing, cross country skiing. You can also find a wide variety of shops, antiques and dine in many of the fine restaurants in and around the towns of New Paltz, Gardiner, Stoneridge, High Falls, and Rosendale.
