Rock Climbing 101: Discover Rock Climbing
Length: 1 day
Cost: $150
If you’ve never rock climbed, or have been climbing indoors at a rock gym, this program is for you. We’ll go over the fundamentals of climbing and focus on giving you the knowledge to become a skilled and confident rock climber. You’ll learn about the relevant equipment, knots and terminology, and then we’ll move right into belaying, body position, footwork and safety around the climbing site.
Rock Climbing 201: Applying Your Skills
Length: 1 day
Cost: $150
Now that you’ve completed Rock Climbing 101, you’re ready to really put those skills to use on the cliff. We’ll build off your basic climbing knowledge and focus on application: when is it best to use one technique rather than another? Which gear is most appropriate for which situation? Is it best to steer toward the cracks, or stick with the footholds on the face? All these issues can be addressed while getting in some great climbing, and we can add pitches of different character or difficulty as we go, depending upon your needs.
Rock Climbing 202: Just Climb!
Length: 1 day
Cost: $150
Once you know the basics, one of the best things to do to improve is get some serious mileage on the cliff. Whether you aim for a long multi-pitch climb, or a series of shorter, more problematic routes, we’ll make sure you get lots of climbing in.
Rock Climbing 301: Top Rope Basics
Length: 2 days
Cost: $280
When it is time to start heading out on your own, you’ll want to hit this course first. We’ll take your knowledge and experience on the rock and fine-tune it to address the myriad issues that come with establishing toprope systems. You’ll learn how to assess a site for climbing and anchoring potential, and how to set anchors at the top and bottom of the crag using a variety of methods and materials. We’ll also cover how to deal with the typical issues that can complicate a day of toproping: difficult cliff-top access, troublesome situations at the edge, awkward descent options, and other potential problems.
Rock Climbing 302: Learn to Lead
Length: 3 days
Cost: $420
Leading a climb from the ground up is an awesome responsibility that is equally rewarding. This intense three-day course will give you the skills and knowledge you’ll need to explore the cliff from the “sharp” end of the rope. We’ll cover a wide variety of topics and introduce a broad selection of scenarios, as leading is a lot more than just going up first and sticking in some gear. You’ll learn about assessing your party in relation to your objectives, route choices and decision-making on the lead, protecting the leader and the seconds, establishing anchors en route, efficient belay-station management, and planning for the descent. Safety, efficiency, and error correction play big roles in this course, and the responsibility of the leader lies in not underestimating the commitment being taken on. Before enrolling, participants should be able to follow 5.8 climbs with confidence, have extensive toproping experience, and possess a thorough understanding of technical climbing equipment.
Rock Climbing 303: Self Rescue
Length: 2 days
Cost: $280
A must for every climber, this course will teach you how to handle all sorts of unanticipated situations on the cliff, using the standard gear you already have on hand. Day One will feature close-to-the-ground practice sessions that will introduce a broad range of tricks and techniques, and Day Two will present rescue scenarios and problem-solving exercises on the cliff. You’ll learn how to anticipate and ultimately address a wide variety of the unexpected challenges we encounter in the vertical world.
Rock Climbing 401: Alpine Routes
Length: 1 day
Cost: $150
For experienced rock climbers, there’s nothing like taking those skills where they really belong – way up high. Consider a long ridge high on New Hampshire’s Cannon Cliff, or one of the ultra-classic buttresses in Mt. Washington’s Huntington Ravine – there’s challenge, exposure, and even history waiting for us up there. This is not the place to learn new skills; it is the place to apply what you have already worked so hard to achieve, so come prepared for a serious day up in the mountains. Your efforts will be rewarded like never before.
Rock Climbing 402: Aid Climbing
Length: 1 day
Cost: $150
Aid climbing puts us in some of the most spectacular positions imaginable. This course introduces the specialized equipment and teaches the fundamental techniques that allow us to venture beyond the limits of free climbing. We’ll cover climbing on aid - using nuts, pitons, hooks and etriers, as well as techniques for ascending the rope, cleaning pitches on aid, and simple hauling systems. Participants should have significant free-climbing experience, including some leading.
Rock Climbing 403: Glacier Skills
Length: 1 day
Cost: $150
If you’ve planned a trip to bigger mountains somewhere this season, you’ll need to bone up on the skills specific to glacier travel and crevasse rescue. Though there are no glaciers in the northeast, we can still teach you the skills necessary to traverse glaciated terrain more safely. We’ll spend a portion of the day learning to assess glaciated terrain, then move on to rigging for glacier travel, crevasse self-extrication, and crevasse partner-rescue systems.
Rock Climbing 501: AMGA Single Pitch Instructor Course
Length: 3 days
Cost: $455
This program is for current, active rock climbers who have a real desire to teach rock climbing to novices in a single pitch setting. Candidates should be passionate climbers (with their own equipment) who regularly climb, and have been climbing outdoors for at least 12 months. The Single Pitch Instructor Program is designed to enable instructors to ‘proficiently facilitate and instruct the sport of rock climbing in a single pitch setting’. The three-day SPI course module covers all the required skills sets for managing a single pitch site from the base or top of the cliff where candidates can either access the top by non-technical terrain or by leading.
Rock Climbing 502: AMGA Single Pitch Instructor Assessment
Length: 2 days
Cost: $295
The SPI Assessment will take place at a single pitch climbing area where there are a selection traditional lead routes in the 5.6 range and toproping routes in the 5.8 range. The assessment will examine all aspects of institutional single pitch climbing that the Single Pitch Instructor may encounter. We will look at climbing movement and all aspects of technical systems from anchoring to assistance skills and general climbing competence. The candidate must show the examiner they have the technical and instructional skills to pass the AMGA Single Pitch Instructor Assessment. The SPI Assessment is broken down into four distinct evaluation sessions; climbing movement, technical skills, teaching ability and group management skills.
